Affordable web design is not the cheapest quote; it is the lowest total you pay for a site that keeps working. A cheap website can cost more than a good one once hosting, security, fixes and the eventual rebuild are added up, and most of those costs arrive after launch, when switching is hardest. Here is what an affordable site really costs, where cheap ones hide their bills, what a fair package includes, and the promises to walk away from. Prices as of September 2026.
How much does affordable web design cost?
Less than most people are quoted, if you count the right things. Clutch, which collects client reviews of design firms, says "most web design projects reviewed on Clutch cost only a few thousand dollars", against an average of $38,105 pulled up by large projects, with the most common rate $100 to $149 an hour (Clutch, September 2026). A site builder costs less again in money and more in your own time. The honest comparison is the total over two years — build, hosting, updates and edits together — because that is what you actually pay. With us that total is $1,955 on a monthly plan ($299 for the build, charged only when you approve the design, then $69 a month), or $1,656 paid yearly, when the build is free, with hosting, updates, backups and edits included.
| Over two years | What you pay |
|---|---|
| Fablence Basic, paid monthly | $1,955: $299 on approval, then $69 a month |
| Fablence Basic, paid yearly | $1,656: the build free, $828 a year |
| Fablence Growth, with SEO, paid monthly | $3,875 |
| A typical design firm | A few thousand dollars to build, then hosting, updates and edits at $100 to $149 an hour |
Where does a cheap website cost you later?
In the parts nobody quotes. If a cheap site is WordPress with a stack of plugins, the plugins are where the risk is: Patchstack found "11,334 new vulnerabilities were found in the WordPress ecosystem in 2025 - that's a 42% increase compared to 2024", with 91% of them in plugins, and, for the most heavily attacked flaws, a median of five hours from disclosure to the first attack (Patchstack, State of WordPress Security in 2026, 25 February 2026). A site that nobody updates can be exposed within the day, and 46% of those flaws had no fix at all when they were made public. Then come the edits billed by the hour, the renewal price on the hosting, and the rebuild when it does not work on a phone. None of it appears on the cheap quote.
Is a cheap website ever worth it?
Yes, when you will run it yourself. If you have a free weekend, enjoy the work and need a few pages that rarely change, a site builder is the cheapest good answer, and paying anyone is the expensive one. A cheap build from a freelancer can also be fine, as long as you get the domain, the hosting login and the files in your own name before the last payment. Cheap goes wrong in one situation: when nobody is responsible after launch. That is when the updates stop, the forms break quietly and the site slides down the results while you are busy running the business. The question to ask of any low price is simple: who fixes it at nine on a Friday night, and what does that cost? If the answer is "you" or "we will quote", count it in the price before you choose.
What should an affordable web design package include?
More than the design. The cheapest packages are cheap because they stop at launch; a fair one prices the first two years, not the first two weeks. Use the list below as a checklist and ask for each item in writing. Anything marked as extra, or not mentioned at all, is a cost you will meet later — usually at an hourly rate, and usually at an awkward moment. Every item here is included in every plan we sell, which is the point of comparing on the whole list rather than on the headline price.
- You own the domain and the content, in your name from day one.
- Hosting and the security certificate, renewed without a surprise bill.
- Software and security updates, applied for you.
- Backups, taken automatically every night.
- Small edits after launch, with a stated monthly allowance.
- A phone-first design that is fast on mobile data.
- The search basics: titles, descriptions, redirects from any old site.
- A way to leave, with your site and data, at no charge.
Can a cheap package guarantee a top Google ranking?
No, and a package that promises one is the clearest sign to walk away. Google says it plainly in its guidance on hiring help: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google" (Google Search Central, updated 5 June 2026). The same page suggests asking past clients whether the work was useful and produced results, which is the right test for anyone selling search work at any price. What a fair package can promise is the groundwork that ranking needs: a site Google can read, fast pages, correct titles and descriptions, and your business listed consistently where people and AI assistants look. Our Growth plan does that work every month, and we report what changed rather than promising a position we cannot control. Ask any provider which of these they do, and how they will show you it was done.
What is the most affordable way to get a professional website?
For most businesses, paying monthly for a site that someone else builds and runs. It removes the large invoice up front, puts updates, hosting and edits in one price, and makes one supplier responsible for all of it. The risk in monthly plans is lock-in, so check that you can leave with your domain, your content and a copy of the site at any time. With us you can: monthly plans run month to month with no exit fee, and a full copy of your site is yours on request, free. If you already have a site, we rebuild it from what is already online — you send us nothing — and show you the new homepage before you pay anything. Common questions
- What is the cheapest way to get a professional website?

Fablence is $299 when you approve the design, then $69 a month, which is $1,955 over two years, or $1,656 paid yearly with the build free.
