Law firm SEO is the work of ranking a firm's website and Google listings for the searches clients make: the map results for a lawyer nearby, the results for a specific legal problem, and now the answers AI assistants give. Three things decide it. Listings that Google's local ranking trusts; pages that meet the higher bar Google sets for topics that affect people's lives; and reviews gathered within the bar's rules. It is also where search is most expensive: advertisers pay about $82 for one click from a search for law firm SEO (Google Keyword Planner, US, our research, September 2026), so every position earned in the free results is money not spent on ads. This guide covers each part, with Google's own words and the American Bar Association's model rules.

How do law firms rank in Google's map results?

The same way every local business does, with one difference: the attorneys can be listed too. Google says that "Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity", and that the last is "also based on info like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have" (Google Business Profile Help, Tips to improve your local ranking, read 28 September 2026). The difference is that lawyers are individual practitioners in Google's rules, so a public-facing attorney can have a profile of their own, but only one: "A practitioner shouldn't have multiple Business Profiles to cover all of their specializations" (Google Business Profile Help, Guidelines for representing your business on Google). A firm with several attorneys in one office therefore has a profile for the office and one for each attorney who meets clients there.

Why does Google hold legal pages to a higher standard?

Because the advice can change someone's life. Google says its systems "give even more weight to content that aligns with strong E-E-A-T for topics that could significantly impact the health, financial stability, or safety of people, or the welfare or well-being of society. We call these 'Your Money or Your Life' topics, or YMYL for short" (Google Search Central, Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content). Legal pages are squarely YMYL. In practice that means each page names the attorney who wrote or reviewed it and where they are admitted, cites the statute or the court it relies on, and shows when it was last updated.

What pages does law firm SEO need?

  • A page per practice area, written for the searches clients make about that problem.
  • A page per office, if the firm has more than one, with its own address and hours.
  • A profile per attorney, with admissions, experience and the practice areas they handle.
  • Answers to the questions clients ask before they call, each cited and dated.
  • Reviews and results, published within your state bar's rules.

Can a law firm pay for reviews?

No, on two counts. The ABA's Model Rule 7.2 says a lawyer "shall not compensate, give or promise anything of value to a person for recommending the lawyer's services", with narrow exceptions (ABA Model Rule 7.2), and Google prohibits incentives for reviews outright. What works is asking every client, at the end of a matter, with a direct link, and replying to what they write.

How long does law firm SEO take?

Longer than most firms expect for the broad searches. Ahrefs found that "only 1.74% of newly published pages rank in the top 10 within a year" (Ahrefs, How long does it take to rank in Google). That is why the work starts with the searches a firm can win: a specific practice area in a specific city, the firm's own name and its attorneys' names, and the map results near its offices.

What should you ask a law firm SEO agency?

  • Will my firm and my attorneys own every Google Business Profile, with you added as a manager?
  • Who reviews legal content before it is published?
  • How will you ask for reviews, and do you offer clients anything for them?
  • Which searches will you report on each month?
  • What stays ours if we leave?

Our Growth plan covers the work above, at $149 a month with the website included: local SEO and Google Business Profile management for the firm and its attorneys, and AI SEO for the assistants. The website itself is described on law firm website design.

Why is law firm SEO so competitive?
Because each client is worth a lot. Advertisers pay about $82 for one click from a search for law firm SEO (Google Keyword Planner, US, September 2026), so firms compete hard for the free results.
