How do AI assistants find a business to recommend?
Through ordinary search indexes and the listings they trust, which is why AI search visibility starts with the basics. ChatGPT's web answers come partly from other search engines: OpenAI says that "ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers" (OpenAI Help Center, Searching the web with ChatGPT, read 28 September 2026). Its own crawler has to be let in, and OpenAI is explicit about it: "To help ensure your site appears in search results, we recommend allowing OAI-SearchBot in your site's robots.txt file" (OpenAI, Overview of OpenAI Crawlers).
Google sets the same bar for its AI Overviews and AI Mode: "To be eligible to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, fulfilling the Search technical requirements. There are no additional technical requirements" (Google Search Central, AI features and your website). Apple Maps listings are managed through Apple Business, which puts it plainly: "Put your business on the map for millions to see" (Apple Business). An assistant cannot recommend a business it cannot read, or one whose details disagree from source to source.
What does the research say works?
What a page says, more than any trick. The best-known controlled study of it, the GEO paper (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024), measured nine ways of rewriting a page against real generative engines. For a source ranked fifth, citing sources raised its visibility by 115.1%, adding quotations by 99.7% and adding statistics by 97.9%. A more authoritative tone added 6.1%, and keyword stuffing did nothing measurable. That is why the pages we write carry sources, quotes and numbers rather than adjectives. How do you measure AI visibility?
Two ways, one on each plan. On every plan, your dashboard counts the visitors each assistant sends: visits arriving from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, claude.ai and copilot.microsoft.com. On Growth, we also ask each assistant a fixed set of questions every month, the questions your customers ask about your kind of business in your area, and record whether it recommends you. The report shows each assistant's recommendation rate beside your Google rankings and Business Profile calls, so you can see whether the work is moving anything.
Can an AI SEO agency guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation?
No, and one that promises it is guessing. Answers change with the question, the day and the person asking. Ask any AI SEO agency these instead, and expect each answer in writing:
